Aargau
Aargau is a tourism region in northern Switzerland, a largely rural canton of rolling hills, Jura ridges and river valleys rather than high mountains. It is known as the 'Wasserkanton' (water canton), where the rivers Aare, Reuss, Limmat and Rhine shape the landscape and meet at the 'Wasserschloss der Schweiz'. The region combines lively small cities such as Aarau, Baden and Brugg with extensive nature, vineyards and historic old towns. Culturally it is rich, with thirteen old towns, castles, monasteries and the ancestral lands of the Habsburg dynasty. Aargau is also a spa region, home to several thermal and wellness baths, and offers a dense network of hiking and cycling routes.
Summer activities
In summer, Aargau is a water and nature destination. The rivers Aare, Reuss, Limmat and Rhine invite swimming and riverside walks, while lakes such as the Hallwilersee and the Klingnauer Stausee offer bathing and birdwatching. A dense network of hiking trails crosses forests, Jura ridges and vineyards, including themed trails and long-distance routes such as the Jura-Höhenweg and the Habsburger Weg. Cycling is a highlight, with gravel, mountain-bike, road and e-bike routes, plus food trails through the wine region.
Culture and entertainment
Aargau is culturally vibrant, with thirteen historic old towns, numerous castles and monasteries, and the ancestral lands of the Habsburg dynasty. The region has a strong performing-arts scene, including the Kurtheater Baden, Bühne Aarau and Stadttheater Olten, as well as museums and galleries such as the Aargauer Kunsthaus and Stapferhaus. Festivals, open-air cinemas, markets and concerts fill a busy cultural calendar throughout the year.
