St.Gallen-Bodensee

St.Gallen-Bodensee
The St.Gallen-Lake Constance region lies in eastern Switzerland, stretching from the shores of Lake Constance to the Säntis mountain peak in the Alpstein massif. It is a varied landscape that combines the historic city of St.Gallen, the harbour town of Rorschach on Lake Constance, the abbey town of Wil and the wine-growing Rhine Valley. The region is dominated by Lake Constance and the Rhine, with rolling hills, vineyards and the high mountains of the Alpstein rising to the south. St.Gallen, the largest city and central hub, is known for its UNESCO-listed Abbey District and its rich textile-making heritage, while the surrounding area offers abundant nature, historic towns and cultural institutions. The region is a gateway to Eastern Switzerland and offers a mix of urban culture, lakeside relaxation and mountain scenery.

Summer activities

In summer the St.Gallen-Lake Constance region is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can explore the Rhine Valley Alpine Trail, the St.Gallen Bridges Trail and culinary hikes, while cyclists and e-bikers can follow the Lake Constance Cycling Route, the Rhine Experiences route and the Heart Route 99. Stand-up paddleboarding on the southern shore of Lake Constance, especially in Rorschach Bay, is a highlight, and open-air pools such as the Drei Weieren ponds and the Säntispark bathing world invite swimming. Boat trips on Lake Constance and the mineral spas complete the summer offer.

Culture and entertainment

St.Gallen is a cultural hub with a rich heritage. The Abbey District, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, centres on the baroque cathedral and the world-famous Abbey Library, one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world. The city's textile-making history is showcased in dedicated museums, and numerous museums, galleries and theatres, including the Theater St.Gallen, offer a lively cultural scene. The region also hosts internationally renowned events such as the Longines CSIO St.Gallen show jumping tournament, the OpenAir St.Gallen festival, the St.Gallen Symposium and the OLMA trade fair.
