Nidwalden
Nidwalden is a tourism region in central Switzerland, lying between the shores of Lake Lucerne and the high peaks of the Alps. The canton is compact yet remarkably mountainous, with more than 40 mountain railways concentrated in a small area, giving it a distinctly alpine character alongside lively lakeside villages and holiday resorts. The region is dominated by Lake Lucerne on one side and high mountains on the other, with rivers such as the Engelberger Aa cutting through the valleys. It is largely rural and nature-oriented, offering hiking, biking, water sports and winter activities, while the town of Stans serves as the cultural and administrative hub at the centre of the region. In summer, Nidwalden is a paradise for hikers, with a dense network of trails from easy lakeside walks to demanding summit and long-distance routes such as the Nidwalden High Trail and the Via Urschweiz. The region's many mountain railways give easy access to alpine meadows and panoramic viewpoints, while Lake Lucerne offers lidos, bathing areas, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and boat trips. Winter activities
Nidwalden is a genuine winter sports region with several ski areas, from the Klewenalp-Stockhütte snow paradise with lake views to the family-friendly Brunni-Engelberg and the snow-sure Engelberg-Titlis region. Beyond downhill skiing, the region offers cross-country skiing trails, ski touring and freeride routes, snowshoeing and winter hiking, and toboggan runs such as the long Klewenalp-Twäregg-Stockhütte-Emmetten sledge run.
