Fürigen Fortress
The Fürigen Fortress, located on the Bürgenberg mountain near Stansstad in the canton of Nidwalden, Switzerland, is a former artillery fort built during the Second World War as part of the Swiss Réduit defence strategy. Since 1991 it has been open as a museum. The permanent exhibition 'Festung Fürigen von 1941 bis heute' presents the formerly secret original equipment and introduces the era of the Second World War and the Cold War. An audiovisual tour leads through the outer tunnel, the gun positions and the accommodation area, showing the life and everyday routine of the soldiers who served here until the 1980s. The fortress also hosts changing temporary exhibitions.
