The Lucerne-Lake Lucerne Region lies in central Switzerland, where the city of Lucerne sits at the heart of the region on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Summer activities
Summer in the Lucerne-Lake Lucerne Region is defined by the contrast of lake and mountains. Hikers can explore the peaks of the Rigi, Pilatus, Titlis and Stanserhorn, reached by record-breaking mountain railways and cableways, while long-distance trails such as the Tell Trail and the Waldstätterweg cross the region. Cyclists and e-bikers find a dense network of routes, including the multi-stage Route 1291 and numerous MTB trails in the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch. Lake Lucerne and its mountain lakes offer swimming, sailing, stand-up paddling, kayaking and boat trips on historic paddle steamers, with many lidos and outdoor pools along the shores.
Winter activities
Winter turns the Lucerne-Lake Lucerne Region into a playground of snow sports. Ski and snowboard areas such as Klewenalp-Stockhütte, Bannalp, Brunni-Engelberg, Hoch-Ybrig and Wirzweli offer slopes for every level, while the region is also known for its extensive cross-country ski trails, notably in the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch around Sörenberg. Snowshoeing and winter hiking trails criss-cross the mountains of the Rigi, Engelberg and Stoos, and numerous toboggan runs, including the longest in Central Switzerland at Melchsee-Frutt, provide fast-paced fun. Many resorts can even be reached by boat across Lake Lucerne.
Culture and entertainment
Lucerne is a city of music and culture, home to the renowned Lucerne Festival with its spring, summer and forward editions, as well as the World Band Festival, the Lucerne Blues Festival and the Luzern Live open-air theatre. The KKL culture and convention centre anchors the city's classical music scene, while a dense network of museums, including the Swiss Museum of Transport, the Rosengart Collection and the Bourbaki Panorama, spans transport history, art and regional heritage. The old town's historic squares, churches and the famous Chapel Bridge give the city its distinctive character, and a lively bar and club scene, rooftop bars and summer bars by the lake round out the cultural offer.
