Uri
Uri is a tourism region in central Switzerland, one of the country's founding cantons, stretching between the fjord-like Lake Uri (Urnersee) and the glaciers around the Gotthard. The landscape is dominated by high Alpine mountains, deep valleys and more than 60 mountain lakes, with the Reuss river running through the valley floor. The region is largely rural and nature-oriented, yet culturally rich, being the home of the Wilhelm Tell legend and the cradle of the Swiss Confederation. The capital Altdorf lies at the centre of the region and serves as the main hub, surrounded by villages such as Flüelen, Bürglen, Erstfeld and Seelisberg. Uri is known as a cable-car eldorado with the densest network of small mountain railways in Switzerland, and as a paradise for hiking, biking and water sports on Lake Uri.
Summer activities
Uri is a year-round outdoor destination, and in summer it shines as a hiking and biking paradise. A 1,500-kilometre network of trails leads from the valley floor to more than 60 crystal-clear mountain lakes, many reachable by cable car. Over 590 kilometres of signposted bike routes climb from the Reuss valley into wild side valleys up to 2,500 metres, complemented by downhill trails such as the one from the Haldi above Schattdorf. Climbers and via ferrata fans find limestone, gneiss and granite walls and routes like the Bälmetentor klettersteig. The fjord-like Lake Uri offers swimming, windsurfing, wing foiling and kayaking, while the Reuss delta and numerous bathing spots provide refreshment.
Winter activities
In winter Uri becomes a paradise for cross-country skiers, snowshoe hikers and ski tourers. Six small, family-run ski areas offer uncomplicated, authentic downhill skiing and snowboarding with fair prices and short distances, ideal for families and beginners. Well-prepared cross-country trails run through wide snowfields, including the Gulispur on the Urnerboden, Switzerland's largest alpine pasture. Marked snowshoe trails lead through silent forests and over sunny terraces, while winter hiking, sledging, ski touring and ice climbing round out the winter offer, all easily reached thanks to the dense cable-car network.
Culture and entertainment
Uri is steeped in history and tradition as one of the founding cantons of Switzerland and the home of the Wilhelm Tell legend. The capital Altdorf offers a lively cultural scene with the Haus für Kunst Uri, the Theater Uri and the Haus der Volksmusik, alongside numerous museums and guided town tours. The region has an impressive density of museums, castles and chapels, including 30 churches and 82 chapels, and is known for its living traditions such as the colourful Urner Fasnacht carnival, folk festivals, alpine customs and a rich collection of local legends and dialect.
