Trient Valley
The Trient Valley lies in the Swiss canton of Valais, at the heart of the Mont Blanc area and close to Martigny (Switzerland) and Chamonix (France). It is a rural, mountainous region of preserved nature, historic villages and exceptional panoramic views, crossed by the spectacular Mont-Blanc Express railway. The valley is made up of the villages of Vernayaz, Salvan-Les Marécottes, Finhaut-Emosson, Trient-Col de la Forclaz and Vallorcine, and is dominated by water: the Trient river, its gorges, the Emosson and Salanfe reservoirs and the Trient glacier. It offers a rich mix of unspoilt nature, unique attractions and a lively cultural and sporting life, with Salvan-Les Marécottes as a central hub.
Summer activities
Summer in the Trient Valley is dominated by water and mountains. Hikers and trail runners can explore the gorges of the Trient and the Dailley, the bisse du Trient path along the historic irrigation channel, and the Salanfe cirque with its mountain lake, reached only on foot. The Emosson area offers guided tours of the dam, a spectacular zip line, a climbing wall on the dam and the archosaur footprint site. Road cycling, mountain biking and e-biking, canyoning in the granite canyons of the Marécottes, climbing, fishing, pony rides and farm visits round out the summer offer.
Winter activities
Winter turns the Trient Valley into a ski destination with several ski areas, including the Marécottes domain served by the VerticAlp cable car, the Balme and Poya domains around Vallorcine, and the small Trient snow garden. Ski schools, sledging runs, ice rinks, snowshoe itineraries, ski touring routes, cross-country skiing and ski joering are all on offer, along with paragliding and climbing.
Culture and entertainment
The Trient Valley has a lively cultural life rooted in its heritage. Museums and galleries include the Marconi Foundation radio museum, the CFF hydroelectric museum at Châtelard-Barberine and the Victoria gallery in Finhaut, while built heritage ranges from military forts to historic bridges and mountain chalets. A busy events calendar features exhibitions, concerts, open-air cinema, village festivals and trail races such as the UTMB, giving the valley a distinctive cultural pulse.
