Rigi
The Rigi is a mountain region in Central Switzerland, lying between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz, known as the 'Queen of the Mountains'. The region combines a high, panoramic mountain massif with lakeside towns and villages such as Vitznau, Weggis, Gersau, Arth-Goldau and Küssnacht, which surround the mountain at the water's edge. It is a largely rural, nature-dominated area with no big cities, where the mountain railway network, including Europe's first cogwheel railway, connects the summit and the lakes. The Rigi offers extensive hiking trails, viewpoints with far-reaching Alpine views, and a rich cultural and musical life, while the car-free resort of Rigi Kaltbad lies at the heart of the mountain. The region is well connected by boat, rail, bus and road from Lucerne and the surrounding cantons.
Summer activities
In summer the Rigi is a hiking mountain with around 120 kilometres of trails, from barrier-free promenades to exposed alpine paths, plus themed trails such as the Alperlebnisweg and the flower path. The lakeside towns around the mountain invite visitors to swim in the cool waters of the surrounding lakes on hot days. Families can enjoy the Rigi Südseiten Safari, playgrounds, a high-rope park, minigolf and carriage rides, while the mineral bath at Rigi Kaltbad and wellness offers round off the summer experience.
Winter activities
In winter the Rigi offers 35 kilometres of well-prepared winter hiking trails, toboggan runs and family-friendly ski areas, as well as snowshoeing and two scenic cross-country skiing trails. The winter sports season runs from late November to early March, with toboggan and ski lifts usable free of charge. Guided snowshoe tours, torchlight walks and snow challenges round out the winter programme.
Culture and entertainment
The Rigi has a lively cultural and musical life, with the mountain celebrated as a 'music mountain' hosting festivals throughout the year, from folk and alphorn gatherings to brass band festivals and electronic music events. The region is rich in history and tradition, with guided village tours, historic railway depots and cultural sites in the lakeside towns. The Rigi has inspired musicians for centuries and is named in over 200 folk songs.
