Lötschental
The Lötschental is a high Alpine valley in the canton of Valais in southern Switzerland, a hidden gem of the Swiss Alps framed by majestic peaks and unspoilt nature. It is a rural, traditional valley with picturesque villages such as Wiler, Kippel, Ferden and Blatten, rather than a big-city destination, and it is crossed by the wild Lonza river rather than dominated by a lake. The valley is known for its living customs and traditions, including the famous Tschäggättä carnival masks, and offers a rich range of outdoor leisure activities. The Lauchernalp ski area and the Fafleralp high valley are central hubs for both summer and winter recreation. In summer the Lötschental is a paradise for hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers, with a dense network of well-marked trails through forests, Alpine meadows and high mountain passes such as the Lötschen Pass. The Lauchernalp and Fafleralp areas offer family-friendly themed trails, including the Legend Trail, the Alpine adventure trail and the Loichi ball trail, as well as monster scooter descents from Lauchernalp to Wiler. Bikers can explore a variety of trails with e-bike rental, bike guides and transport by post bus and cable car, plus a pump track in Steg. Guided hikes, flower walks, climbing and mountain guides round out the summer offer.
Winter activities
In winter the Lötschental is a compact but varied winter sports destination centred on the Lauchernalp ski area, which offers 40 kilometres of pistes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, plus freeride and ski touring opportunities. The children's paradise Loichiland with magic carpets and ski schools makes it family-friendly, while a toboggan run from Lauchernalp to Wiler and sledge hire add to the fun. Winter hikers and snowshoers can explore groomed trails and guided snowshoe tours, and cross-country skiers have 8 kilometres of classic and skating trails along the Lonza to the Fafleralp.
Culture and entertainment
The Lötschental is deeply rooted in living Alpine tradition, most famously the Tschäggättä, mysterious carnival figures in carved wooden masks that appear during the local Fasnacht, along with customs such as the Herrgottsgrenadiere and the Chinigrosslini. The valley's history and culture are preserved in the Löstschental Museum in Kippel, while art and culture come alive at the Schtadl in Kippel and in local studios. Traditional music with alphorns and yodel songs, village tours in Blatten and Kippel, and a rich calendar of events including the Fafleralp Sessions and theatre performances round out the cultural life.
