Visp & Moosalp
The Moosalp region lies in the heart of the Upper Valais in Switzerland, around the Moosalp mountain pass and the town of Visp, which serves as the main gateway. It is a rural, unspoilt holiday region made up of four traditional mountain villages – Bürchen, Embd, Törbel and Zeneggen – set on sunny terraces above the Visp and Rhone valleys. The landscape is dominated by high mountains and forests rather than lakes, with views towards the Bietschhorn and the Valais and Bernese Alps. The villages retain an authentic, historic character with scattered hamlets, narrow lanes and typical Valais architecture. Nature is abundant and largely untouched, offering a quiet alternative to mass tourism, while the town of Visp at the centre of the region provides the main rail and road access. The area is a popular destination for both summer and winter holidays, with a well-developed network of hiking trails and a family-friendly ski area.
Summer activities
In summer the Moosalp region offers a wide range of outdoor activities. The Moosalp-Törbel hiking area alone comprises over 75 km of trails, including high-altitude paths, easy walks to neighbouring villages and viewpoints such as the Stand, which looks out over twelve surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks. Visitors can also go Nordic walking, mountain biking and cycling, climbing, geocaching, tennis, football and minigolf, or follow themed trails such as the squirrel path and the birch nature trail. The region also features a vitaparcours fitness trail and family offers such as MoosAlbi's world.
Winter activities
In winter the Moosalp region is a family-friendly ski destination. The Moosalp ski area is served by mountain railways, and most of the more than 700 chalets in Bürchen can be reached on skis or snowboard. Besides downhill skiing and snowboarding, the region offers night skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, winter hiking and ice skating, as well as children's offers such as MoosAlbi's children's paradise and the Pistenbully co-pilot experience. The region is one of the fastest-reachable ski areas from Bern.
Culture and entertainment
The Moosalp region has a modest but distinctive cultural life rooted in its traditional mountain villages. Visitors can discover the region's heritage through the open-air village museum Urchigs Terbil in Törbel, which illustrates life in a historic Valais mountain village, as well as a mule museum and a local exhibition. The villages themselves, with their narrow lanes, sun-darkened houses and typical Valais architecture, form a living cultural landscape, and the region hosts seasonal events and culinary highlights throughout the year.
