Slate Board Factory Elm
The Slate Board Factory Elm in Elm, Switzerland, is the only surviving slate board factory in Switzerland. In the former production site on Sandgasse near the church, all the tools, equipment and machines needed to make writing boards are preserved. During a guided tour of about one and a half hours, the production of the well-known writing and jass boards is demonstrated using the still functional machines. Closely linked to the history of slate mining is the tragedy of the devastating rockfall in Elm on 11 September 1881. The old craft is today presented to visitors using the latest museum pedagogy.
Families and Kids
The guided tour of the slate board factory is suitable for children aged 10 and over in school groups. The factory can also be combined with a village tour or a visit to the Landesplattenberg mine.
