Munot

The Munot is a 16th-century fortress towering high above the city of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. Built between 1564 and 1589 as an artillery fortress and part of the city fortifications, it is today the city's landmark. Visitors can explore the casemate, the Reitschnecke, the Zinne viewing platform and the western flanking wall free of charge. The Munot also houses a fallow deer colony in its moat and is used by the Munotverein for numerous cultural events.

  • Is the Munot accessible for wheelchair users?
    No, the Munot is unfortunately not barrier-free. Steep climbs and demanding stairs lead to the fortress, and the Reitschnecke to the Zinne has medieval cobblestones with a 15 percent incline.
  • Can I book a guided tour of the Munot?
    Yes, guided tours lasting about 1.5 hours are offered by the Munotwächterin Sabine Hinz and her husband Andi. They include the casemate, the Reitschnecke and the Zinne, and on request also the underground passage and the Wehrgang, which are otherwise not publicly accessible.
  • Is there a bar or restaurant on the Munot?
    Yes, the bar 'd'Zinne' is located on the Munotzinne and offers drinks, snacks and a view over Schaffhausen. It is open from June to September, Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 20:00, weather permitting.
  • Can I hold a private event or aperitif on the Munot?
    Yes, private aperitifs and celebrations on and in the Munot are possible but require a permit from the president of the Munotverein. Events may only take place during the regular opening hours, and amplified music, open fires and fireworks are not permitted.

    The Munot is only a few minutes' walk from the city centre or the train station. Bus line 4 stops at 'Künzleheim', from where the fortress is quickly reached. Alternatively, line 8 goes to 'Schifflände', from where the Munotstieg leads up in about 10 minutes.
