Grächen-St. Niklaus
Grächen-St. Niklaus is a sunny mountain holiday region in the Swiss canton of Valais, set in the Mattertal valley of the Upper Valais. The region is dominated by high Alpine peaks, including numerous four-thousand-metre summits, and is centred on the car-free village of Grächen at around 1,620 metres above sea level, with St. Niklaus in the valley below. It is a rural, nature-focused destination rather than a big-city area, with no large lake but with mountain lakes, glaciers and the Ried Glacier shaping the landscape. The region is known for its traditional Valaisian character, customs and architecture, and offers a lively cultural and culinary scene alongside extensive outdoor activities. Grächen serves as the central hub, connected to St. Niklaus by road and cable car, and is a gateway to the wider Matterhorn Gotthard region.
Summer activities
In summer, Grächen is an outdoor sports paradise with over 250 kilometres of marked hiking trails, from relaxed family routes to demanding summit tours such as the high-altitude trail to Saas-Fee and the climb to the Wannihorn. The Grächen–Visp mountain biking region offers trails for all levels, including the Grächen Flowtrail, the Mattsand Enduro and a bike park on the Hannigalp, plus a pump track. Mountain lakes, Kneipp facilities, outdoor pools and the Brigerbad thermal spa provide swimming and cooling off, while alpine huts such as the Bordierhütte and Europahütte offer overnight stays on multi-day hikes.
Winter activities
In winter, Grächen becomes a snowy winter wonderland centred on the Hannigalp ski area, with 44 kilometres of groomed ski runs served by the Hannigalpbahn cable car up to 2,864 metres, plus a snowpark, family park and ski and snowboard schools. Two official sledge runs, including a steep three-kilometre toboggan run down to Z'Seew, add to the fun. More than 38 kilometres of winter hiking trails and 23 kilometres of snowshoeing trails, including the King's Route to the Wannihorn, offer tranquil alternatives, while snowbiking and a lively après-ski scene round out the winter offer.
Culture and entertainment
Grächen upholds a rich variety of Valaisian customs and traditions, with museums on local history and mountain guides, a self-guided village tour of historic buildings and barns, and cultural summer highlights including traditional music and dance workshops. The region hosts a lively calendar of events such as the Reine du Soleil cow-fighting festival, the Grächen Cabaret Festival, the Flanier Abund street festival, concerts and open-air theatre. A lively nightlife scene with après-ski bars, clubs and the Mascotte Club complements the cultural offer.
