Flims Laax Falera
Flims Laax Falera is a mountain tourism region in the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland, centred on the three villages of Flims, Laax and Falera. The region lies on a sunny terrace above the Rhine gorge, known as the Swiss Grand Canyon, and is framed by high Alpine peaks reaching over 3,000 metres, including the UNESCO World Heritage Sardona tectonic arena. It is a rural, nature-dominated destination with no large cities, where the landscape is shaped by forests, alpine meadows, glacial lakes such as the turquoise Caumasee, and the dramatic Rhine gorge. The region is a year-round outdoor hub, famous for its extensive hiking and mountain-biking trail network, its freestyle and snowpark culture, and its ski area around Crap Sogn Gion. Flims, Laax and Falera are small Alpine villages that together form the central hub of the destination, offering a mix of traditional mountain character and modern resort infrastructure.
Summer activities
In summer, Flims Laax Falera is a hiking and mountain-biking paradise with around 250 kilometres of marked trails from the Rhine gorge up to peaks above 3,000 metres in the UNESCO Sardona World Heritage area. The region is one of Europe's leading bike destinations, with flow trails, freeride lines and enduro singletrails such as the Runca, Nagens and Never End trails, plus gravel and road routes. Three bathing lakes – the turquoise Caumasee, the Crestasee and the Laaxersee – offer swimming, stand-up paddling and pedalos, while the Rhine gorge is a top spot for river rafting and kayaking. Climbing gardens, via ferrata, the world's longest treetop walkway, paragliding and golf round out the summer offer.
Winter activities
Flims Laax is one of Switzerland's leading winter sports destinations, with 216 kilometres of pistes, 30 lifts and a ski area that is largely above 2,000 metres, making it one of the most snow-sure regions in the country. It is renowned as the leading freestyle resort in the Alps, with five snowparks, more than 90 obstacles and the world's longest continuous halfpipe. Beyond alpine skiing and snowboarding, the region offers 62 kilometres of cross-country trails, freeride routes secured by avalanche control, winter hiking and snowshoeing, sledging, night skiing, ice skating and curling.
Culture and entertainment
Flims Laax Falera has a modest but distinctive cultural scene rooted in its Alpine heritage. The region is home to several museums and exhibition spaces, including a local history museum in Laax, the architecturally celebrated Das Gelbe Haus in Flims, and the Festungsmuseum Sperre Trin, a former secret military fortification from the Second World War. The megalithic site of Parc La Mutta near Falera offers guided tours of Bronze Age stone formations, and the Mirasteilas observatory hosts the largest publicly accessible telescope in Switzerland. Events such as the traditional Alpabzug cattle descent and the LAAX OPEN freestyle competition add to the cultural calendar.
