Engelberg-Titlis
Engelberg-Titlis is a mountain tourism region in Central Switzerland, located almost in the middle of the country and about an hour's drive from Zurich. The region is centred on the monastery village of Engelberg, which lies in a high valley at around 1000 metres above sea level, surrounded by high alpine peaks and dominated by the Titlis glacier at 3020 metres. It is a rural, nature-focused destination rather than an urban one, with no big cities; the nearby Lucerne-Lake Lucerne region is about 30 to 45 minutes away. The landscape is defined by high mountains, alpine pastures, gorges and mountain lakes rather than by a single large lake. Engelberg has a strong historical character rooted in its Benedictine monastery, founded in 1120, and a long winter-sports tradition. The village of Engelberg is the central hub of the region, offering modern mountain railways, a free local bus and a wide range of outdoor activities in both summer and winter.
Summer activities
Summer in the high valley of Engelberg is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with over 500 km of hiking trails ranging from leisurely valley walks to high-alpine summit tours. The region is one of the largest biking areas in Central Switzerland, offering e-bike routes, downhill trails on the Jochpass and challenging enduro tours. Highlights include the 47 km Alpine Cheese Trail past seven alpine cheese dairies, the panoramic Four Lakes Trail, the high-altitude Walenpfad and the Buiräbähnli Safari cable-car hike. Climbers can enjoy five via ferrata routes, climbing gardens and alpine routes, while an 18-hole golf course, trail running, mountain lakes for swimming and rowing, and the year-round Titlis glacier with its attractions round out the summer offer.
Winter activities
Engelberg is a top winter-sports destination with guaranteed snow from October to May thanks to the Titlis glacier, offering the longest continuous ski season in Switzerland with over 220 skiing days. The ski area features 82 km of slopes, a 2000-metre descent from the Titlis down to the valley, the world's first revolving cable car (Titlis Rotair) and the highest suspension bridge in Europe. Engelberg is also one of the world's leading freeride destinations with the legendary 'Big 5', plus ski touring, 43 km of cross-country trails for classic and skating technique, sledding runs on former bobsleigh tracks, winter hiking and snowshoe trails, and family-friendly beginner slopes and children's parks.
Culture and entertainment
Engelberg's cultural life is shaped by its Benedictine monastery, founded in 1120, which has influenced the village for over 900 years and offers guided tours, a cultural summer programme with concerts and events, and a rich tradition of Benedictine hospitality. The village also has a folk museum, cheese factories and historic buildings, while living traditions and customs remain omnipresent. A chamber music festival and the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup are among the annual events, and the region's long bobsleigh and winter-sports history is part of its identity.
