Château de Chillon is a medieval water castle built on a rocky island on Lake Geneva in Veytaux, Switzerland, near Montreux. The fortress, shaped by the Savoy, Bernese and Vaud periods, is one of Switzerland's most visited historic monuments. Its visit route presents nearly three hundred objects from archaeological excavations, including the famous Bonivard prison, Gothic vaulted cellars, and princely residence rooms.

  • Are guided tours available in languages other than French?
    Guided tours are offered in French, English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese). Self-guided visits use a free explanatory leaflet available in 19 languages.
  • Can I bring a stroller or pushchair on the visit route?
    No, pushchairs are not permitted on the visit route due to heritage constraints. They must be left in the cloakroom in the cafeteria (unattended). Baby carriers are recommended.
  • Is the castle accessible for wheelchair users?
    The castle is difficult to access for wheelchair users or people using walkers due to narrow passages, paved floors and many stairs. Only the paved courtyards, the cafeteria with adapted toilets, the bazar and the Café Byron are accessible. Two audiovisual terminals offer a virtual tour of the castle.
  • Can I buy my entrance ticket on site?
    For visitor comfort and safety, the entrance ticket must be purchased directly on the castle's online ticket office. Tickets are reserved by time slot.
  • Are animals allowed inside the castle?
    No, animals are not admitted inside the castle. Open kennels are available next to the bazar. Only assistance dogs accompanying visually impaired people are allowed with a valid assistance dog passport and approved harness.
  • Is there a restaurant on site?
    Yes, the Café Byron, ideally located opposite the castle, welcomes visitors throughout the day. The castle also offers a relaxation area with vending machines and drinks, and in summer a Buvette in its gardens.
