Wisent Thal

Wisent Thal is a wildlife project in Welschenrohr, Switzerland, where a supervised test herd of European bison (wisent) lives in a walkable, fenced enclosure of about 100 hectares in the Solothurn Jura. The project combines scientific accompanying research with a freely accessible enclosure that brings people and animals closer together. Visitors can explore the enclosure on their own or join guided tours with experienced wisent guides. The project aims to determine whether free-living wisents can thrive in the Jura landscape.

    Yes, dogs are allowed in the enclosure, but they must be kept on a short leash and under control at all times. Keep a minimum distance of 50 metres from the wisents.
  • Are there toilets at the enclosure?
    Yes, there is a mobile toilet at the 'Wisent-Schöpfli' at the enclosure entrance on the Sollmatt.
  • Can I grill or picnic at the enclosure?
    No. There is no infrastructure for grilling and no seating areas in or around the enclosure, and no food or drink is available there.
  • Do guided tours take place in any weather?
    Yes, guided tours take place in any weather. If you cancel at short notice, for example due to bad weather, the tour must still be paid for. If the tour is cancelled for safety reasons, the money is refunded.
  • Can I take photos in the enclosure?
    Yes, photography is allowed. However, the use of camouflage tents or similar hides is prohibited for safety reasons.
  • Are guided tours offered in other languages?
    Our guided tours are held in German. If you wish a tour in another language, please contact us directly.
