Verbier / Val de Bagnes
Verbier and the Val de Bagnes form a high-alpine tourism region in the Swiss canton of Valais, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The destination is dominated by high mountains, with the resort of Verbier perched around 1,500 metres and summits such as the Mont-Fort rising to over 3,300 metres, while the valley floor is carved by the Dranse river and dotted with villages such as Le Châble, Bruson, La Tzoumaz and Fionnay. It is a rural, nature-rich area rather than an urban one, known above all as the beating heart of the 4 Vallées, the largest linked ski area in Switzerland, and as a world-renowned freeride destination. In summer the same terrain becomes a playground for hiking, mountain biking, climbing and golf, with high-altitude lakes and alpages. The region also has a lively cultural and culinary scene, anchored in local traditions such as the Raclette du Valais AOP and the Hérens cow, and hosts major events including the Verbier Festival and the Xtreme Verbier freeride final. Verbier itself is the central hub of the destination, with the valley's main access point at Le Châble.
Summer activities
In summer the Val de Bagnes transforms into a vast outdoor playground. Hikers and trail runners can choose from a rich palette of marked trails, from family walks along the bisses to multi-day treks and nights in mountain huts, while the Verbier Bike Park offers nine downhill runs and 19 kilometres of trails that make the resort one of Switzerland's downhill-bike capitals, alongside enduro, gravel and road cycling. Climbers find more than thirty crags plus via ferrata routes in the gorges of Mauvoisin and at the Col des Gentianes, and golfers can play the 18-hole Esserts course at over 1,600 metres. High-altitude lakes, alpages and the Mauvoisin dam complete the picture, with paragliding and the Mont 4 Zipline for adrenaline seekers.
Winter activities
Verbier is the beating heart of the 4 Vallées, the largest linked ski area in Switzerland, with over 400 kilometres of pistes and 80 lifts reaching up to the Mont-Fort at 3,330 metres. The resort is a world-famous freeride destination, with eight marked freeride itineraries, a snowpark at La Chaux, heliskiing on the Rosablanche and Petit Combin, and the Xtreme Verbier final of the Freeride World Tour. Beyond downhill skiing, the region offers ski touring itineraries, cross-country skiing loops at Les Ruinettes, Plamproz and Champsec, snowshoeing and winter hiking trails, and two toboggan runs including the long La Tzoumaz track. Beginner zones, funslopes and a DVA Park complete the winter offer.
Culture and entertainment
Verbier and the Val de Bagnes have a lively cultural and event scene that extends well beyond the slopes. The Verbier Festival brings world-class classical music to the resort each summer, while the Polaris Festival and events like Rocklette and Electroclette mix music with local raclette traditions. Contemporary art exhibitions, such as the Éosphoros show by Hugues Reip, and the 3-D Sculpture Park add an artistic dimension, and the region's agritourism and terroir events, including the Bagnes Capitale de la Raclette and the Grand Marché des Terroirs Alpins, celebrate local gastronomy and the Hérens cow. An active après-ski and nightlife scene with bars and clubs rounds out the offering.
