Thun Castle Museum

Thun Castle Museum is located in the medieval Thun Castle high above the town of Thun in Switzerland. The historical museum tells 800 years of Thun's history across seven levels of the donjon – from the cellar to the towers. The permanent exhibition features the uniquely preserved Knights' Hall, the Thun majolica ceramics collection, as well as coats of arms, tapestries and militaria. The museum also presents annually changing special exhibitions on historical and cultural themes.

Families and Kids

The castle offers a range of activities for children and families: the Rittertrail (knight trail) across three Thunersee castles, a detective game and the 'Made in Thun' search game are included in the castle admission. Children aged 6 to 16 pay CHF 3, under 6 are free. The castle is not suitable for strollers due to many stairs.

FAQ

  • Can I visit the castle with a stroller?
    The historic castle is not suitable for strollers due to the many stairs. A baby carrier is recommended; strollers can be left at the castle ticket office during the visit.
  • Are dogs allowed in the castle?
    Assistance dogs accompanying people with illness or disability are welcome. All other dogs must remain outside to protect the historic rooms and the collection.
  • How long does a visit typically take?
    Depending on your interest, a visit lasts between 30 minutes and two hours – from a short tour with a view over the town and lake to an in-depth visit of the exhibitions and towers.
  • Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
    Partially. The castle dates from the 12th century: stairs and narrow passages are structurally unavoidable, there is no lift in the building, and the towers are only reachable via stairs. Checked details are available in the OK:GO profile.
  • Are there guided tours available?
    Yes. For groups we offer classic tours (60 minutes, up to 20 people, from CHF 160 plus admission), themed tours and tours with aperitif – in German, French, English or Italian. There are also discovery tours for children.
  • Is there a restaurant or hotel at the castle?
    Directly next to the castle is the Schlosshotel Thun (Schlossberg 2), an independent establishment with restaurant, castle bar and 14 rooms. For group events and celebrations in the castle we also work with culinary partner businesses.
