Thun Castle

Thun Castle in Thun, Switzerland, is a medieval castle museum with four towers that towers high above the city and offers views of Lake Thun and the Alps. Since 1888 the donjon has housed the Historical Museum, which tells 800 years of Thun's history across seven levels – from the cellar to the towers. Highlights include the uniquely preserved high-medieval Knights' Hall and a collection of over 17,000 objects, including the significant Thun majolica. The castle also offers changing special exhibitions and a virtual 3D experience.

Families and Kids

Thun Castle offers many activities for children and families: the Rittertrail (knight trail) across three castles, a detective game, and the 'Made in Thun' search game, all available at the ticket office. Children aged 6 to 16 pay CHF 3, and those under 6 enter free. The castle is not suitable for strollers due to the many stairs.

FAQ

  • Can I visit the castle with a stroller?
The historic castle is not suitable for strollers due to the many stairs. A baby carrier is recommended; you can leave your stroller at the castle ticket office during your visit.
  • Are dogs allowed in the castle?
Assistance dogs accompanying people with an illness or disability are welcome. All other dogs must stay outside to protect the historic rooms and the collection.
  • Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
Partially. The castle dates from the 12th century: stairs and narrow passages are structurally unavoidable, there is no lift in the building, and the towers are only reachable via stairs. Verified details are available in the OK:GO profile.
  • How long does a visit take?
Depending on your interest, a visit lasts between 30 minutes and two hours – from a short tour with a view over the city and lake to an in-depth visit of the exhibitions and towers.
  • Where can I park?
Please do not drive up to the castle hill. The nearest parking is the Parkhaus City Ost Schlossberg (Burgstrasse 17), with a lift and a short walk to the old town and the castle.
