Swiss Dufour Museum

The Swiss Dufour Museum in Sattel, Switzerland, is the country's only Dufour museum and is located in a former artillery fortress. It is dedicated to the life and work of Guillaume Henri Dufour, the first general of the Swiss army, cartographer, engineer and co-founder of the Red Cross. The exhibition shows surveying technology, geodetic measuring instruments, first editions, original drawings, the only modular Dufour map as well as material on the history of Swiss cartography and the fortress. The museum also offers insights into the military past of the fortress and hosts changing temporary exhibitions.

The museum is open from May to October on selected weekends (Saturday and Sunday) with public guided tours at 9:00 and 13:00.

    The fortress temperature is between 6° and 10° C. It is recommended to wear warm shoes and warm clothing.
  • How long does the visit last?
    The visit to both sites (museum and fortress) lasts about 2½ hours.
  • Is the museum accessible for wheelchair users?
    No, the museum and the fortress are unfortunately not barrier-free from a structural point of view and are not suitable for wheelchairs or people with walking difficulties.
  • What payment methods are available?
    Card payment and Twint are not possible. Cash payment applies for public tours; for group tours and overnight stays, cash payment or invoice is possible.
  • Do I need to register for the public guided tours?
    No, the public guided tours take place without registration. Registration is required for separate group tours.
