Seetal
The Seetal is a tourism region in central Switzerland, spanning the cantons of Aargau and Lucerne between the Hallwilersee and Baldeggersee lakes. Known as the "valley of castles and lakes", it is a gently rolling, rural landscape of vineyards, hills and small towns rather than high mountains. The region is shaped by its two lakes, the Aabach river and a network of hiking and e-bike trails, with the historic town of Lenzburg at its centre. It offers a mix of nature, cultural heritage and gastronomy, including a small but notable wine region that is the oldest in the canton of Lucerne. Numerous castles, ruins and monasteries dot the area, connected by walking routes. The Seetal is a calm, family-friendly destination that combines outdoor activity with regional food and drink.
Summer activities
In summer the Seetal is an e-bike and hiking region, with well-developed routes such as the Herzschlaufe Seetal, the Seetaler Seen- und Schlösserroute and the E-Bike FoodTrail. The Hallwilersee is the region's bathing and experience lake, with regular scheduled boat trips, lidos and strandbads, and water sports such as canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and motor boating. Hiking trails include the Aargauer Schloss- und Kulturweg, the lakeside path around the Hallwilersee, the wine hiking trail and the industrial-culture path along the Aabach. Joggers can use several Vita parcours, and the biennial slowUp Seetal turns a car-free route around the Baldeggersee into a cycling and skating event.
Culture and entertainment
The Seetal is rich in cultural heritage, centred on the historic town of Lenzburg with its old town and castle, and a string of castles, ruins and monasteries such as Schloss Hallwyl, Schloss Wildegg, Schloss Heidegg, the Nünegg castle ruin and the Johanniterkommende Hohenrain. The region keeps its traditions alive through year-round customs and festivals, from Fasnacht and the Lenzburg Joggeliumzug to the Chlausmärt, Christmas markets, the Silvester-Dreschen and the Lichterschwemme. A lively calendar of markets and events includes the Mai- und Chlausmärt, the Drachentalfest, open-air theatre and concerts, while museums and guided tours round out the cultural offer.
