Schwarzsee-Senseland is a tourism region in the canton of Fribourg in western Switzerland, centred on the Schwarzsee lake nestled in the gentle Fribourg Pre-Alps. The region belongs to the German-speaking Sense district (Sensebezirk), which makes it culturally distinct within the bilingual canton. It is a rural, nature-oriented area of rolling mountain landscapes, alpine pastures, and the Sense river, with no large cities; the villages of the district form its settlement core. The region is known for its alpine huts, traditional customs such as the Alpabzug cattle descent, and its local Sensler dialect and folklore. The Schwarzsee lake and the Riggisalp mountain plateau are the central hubs for outdoor recreation, while the surrounding countryside offers extensive hiking and biking networks.
Summer activities
Summer in Schwarzsee-Senseland centres on the Schwarzsee lake and the Riggisalp plateau, reached by the Kaisereggbahnen chairlift. A roughly 200 km hiking network climbs to the region's highest peak, the Schafberg at 2239 m, and passes inviting alpine huts. The lake offers swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, pedalos, and fishing, plus a Kneipp trail with eight stations around the shore. Mountain bikers find routes across the Sense district, a bike park and pump track in Plaffeien, and a flow trail down from the Riggisalp, with bike transport on the cable car.
Winter activities
Winter in Schwarzsee-Senseland offers a compact family ski area on the Riggisalp-Kaiseregg, with two chairlifts and two ski lifts serving 22 km of groomed, snowmaking-covered pistes, plus night skiing on a lit 4 km run. The small Hapfere family lift in Plaffeien is ideal for children and beginners. Beyond downhill skiing, the region offers snowshoe trails, winter hiking on the Riggisalp and around the lake, sledging runs including evening sledging, and ice skating on the frozen Schwarzsee or in the covered rink in Düdingen.
Culture and entertainment
The cultural life of Schwarzsee-Senseland is shaped by the Sense district being the only purely German-speaking district in the canton of Fribourg, where the local Senslerdeutsch dialect is spoken. This linguistic identity fosters a lively cultural scene, from the Sensler Museum preserving regional heritage to the rich tradition of local legends and fairy tales. The region hosts concerts, theatre and cultural events in its villages, and celebrates traditional customs such as the Alpabzug cattle descent and alpine festivals.
