Museum Burg Zug

The Museum Burg Zug is a historical museum housed in Zug Castle, the oldest surviving secular building in the town of Zug, Switzerland. Its permanent exhibition presents the cultural history of the Canton of Zug from the High Middle Ages to the present, with themed rooms covering governance and warfare, religion and the Baroque world, residential culture, arts and crafts, and coinage. The collection comprises some 50,000 objects, of which about one thousand are on display at any given time. The museum also hosts changing temporary exhibitions on current topics.

FAQ

  • Is the museum accessible with a pram or stroller?
    No. The museum is located in a historical building with many winding stairs and hallways, so the exhibitions are not accessible with prams. Small prams can be deposited next to the welcome desk, and baby changing facilities are available.
  • Can I take photographs inside the museum?
    Yes, taking photographs in the exhibitions is allowed. However, the use of a tripod and flash is not permitted, and taking photos or videos with drones is generally only permitted with authorisation.
  • Are there guided tours available in sign language?
    Yes. The museum offers public guided tours of the special exhibition with a sign language interpreter, and private guided tours with sign language translation are available on request in co-operation with procom.
  • Is there a café and a museum shop on site?
    Yes. The self-service castle café offers cold and hot drinks as well as sweet and savoury snacks, with outdoor seating in the courtyard in summer. The museum shop offers gifts for children and adults such as knights' helmets, swords, castle tea, chocolate, games and postcards.
  • Are children's birthday parties offered at the museum?
    Yes. Children's birthday parties are held on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm for children aged 6 to 9, with a maximum of 10 children. They cost CHF 275 including a snack and two accompanying adults, and are held exclusively in German. Registration is required at least 4 weeks in advance.
  • Is the museum open on public holidays?
    The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm on all national and cantonal (Zug) public holidays including New Year's Eve, Easter Monday and Whit Monday. It is closed on Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
