Leuk
Leuk is a tourism region in the heart of the Swiss canton of Valais, at the boundary between Upper and Lower Valais and on the edge of the French-speaking part of the canton. The region comprises the villages of Susten, Leuk-Stadt and Erschmatt, which together form one municipality, set within the Regional Nature Park Pfyn-Finges. It is a rural, sun-drenched area with a Mediterranean climate, around 3,500 hours of sunshine a year, where rare plants thrive and over 130 bird species live. The landscape ranges from the wild Rhône river to glaciers, flower meadows and rock faces, and the region is known for its vineyards and wine culture. The historic town of Leuk-Stadt, with its medieval atmosphere, lies at the centre of the region, surrounded by vineyards and offering views over the Rhône valley and the Pfynwald forest. The area combines rich natural heritage with cultural life, including theatre, opera, music and literature, and is a base for exploring the wider Valais.
Summer activities
Leuk is a paradise for hikers, with countless trails through the Pfynwald forest, the Leukerberge mountains and the Leukerfeld plateau, along the historic Suonen (bisse) irrigation channels and the Walliser Weinweg wine trail that starts in Susten. Mountain bikers find well-marked trails and endless elevation gain in the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, supported by a network of e-bike charging stations and bike rental. The region also offers the only Scottish links-style 18-hole golf course in Switzerland, playable from March to November, swimming at the Bella Tola pool, and the Gemmi Daubenhorn via ferrata near Leukerbad, the longest in Switzerland. Culture and entertainment
Leuk is a lively cultural hub in the Valais, described as a place where boredom never sets in. The Schloss Leuk foundation restores and manages the bishop's castle and hosts cultural events, while the annual Forum Wallis festival for new music has produced over 300 world premieres there since 2006. The region has a strong performing-arts scene with Operette Leuk, combining a local amateur choir with professional singers, and Theater Leuk, active for over 70 years. Literary life is marked by the annual Spycher literature prize, which grants laureates a residence in Leuk-Stadt. The Fasnacht carnival brings colour and music to Leuk and Susten, and the Määrliwelt transforms the medieval town into a fairy-tale world for children.
