Landshut Castle

Landshut Castle in Utzenstorf (Canton of Bern, Switzerland) is the only surviving moated castle in the canton of Bern and has housed the Swiss Museum of Wildlife and Hunting since 1968. The roughly 400-year-old former bailiff's castle with its oversized stair tower lies in a 4.5-hectare English landscape park. In the castle and the granaries, permanent exhibitions show the way of life of native wildlife as well as the cultural and artistic history of hunting, including the La Roche hunting history collection, falconry, hunting dogs, hunting horns and historical firearms. The castle also regularly hosts changing special exhibitions.

Opening hours

Open during the season (May 10 to October 11): Tuesday to Saturday 14:00–17:00, Sunday 10:00–17:00. Closed on Mondays, as well as on Whit Monday, August 1 and the Swiss Federal Day of Thanksgiving. Winter break from mid-October to mid-May.

  • Is the castle park accessible outside the season?
    Yes, the 4.5-hectare castle park is freely accessible all year round. However, the castle, museums and castle café are closed from mid-October to mid-May.
  • Are dogs allowed in the castle and in the park?
    Dogs are welcome in the castle park on a leash. However, they may not be taken into the museum. A leash requirement applies throughout the entire grounds.
  • Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
    The castle café and the special exhibition are wheelchair accessible. However, the castle bridge and the inner courtyard are paved with natural stone. There is an accessible toilet in the special exhibition room.
  • Can you have a picnic in the castle park?
    Events, free aperitifs, picnics and the like are not permitted in the castle park itself. However, there is a barbecue area directly behind the castle on the Emme river (about 8–10 minutes' walk) for a break.
  • Are there guided tours of the castle?
    Yes, guided tours can be booked with the castle warden during the summer season. Requests should be submitted at least 10 days before the desired date. A standard tour lasts about 1 hour and costs CHF 100.- (plus admission per person).
