Gutenberg Castle

The medieval Gutenberg Castle towers on a vine-covered rock in Balzers, the southernmost municipality of the Principality of Liechtenstein. The castle was rebuilt in the Historicist style by Egon Rheinberger at the beginning of the 20th century and is today a landmark of the municipality. The castle hill has been settled for millennia, as archaeological finds such as the Gutenberg votive statuettes attest. The castle serves as a backdrop for guided tours, cultural events and private functions.

Opening hours

The castle complex is not open daily but is available by prior arrangement from 1 May to 31 October for events and visits. During this period the castle chapel with rose garden is freely accessible on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. From 1 November to 30 April the castle complex remains closed. The outer bailey (outer area) is freely accessible all year round.

  • How can I visit or book Gutenberg Castle?
    Visits (guided tours) are only carried out on request; there are no general dates for guided tours. Booking requests can be made via the enquiry form or by telephone. For telephone enquiries, the office of the Gutenberg Castle support association is available during the season on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:30 to 11:30 and from 13:00 to 16:00.
  • Is the castle complex accessible for people with physical disabilities?
    The entire castle area, both inside and outside, is only accessible on foot and is therefore only conditionally suitable for events and visits for people with reduced mobility. Any driving permits for people with physical disabilities can be obtained from the Balzers municipal police.
  • Are there public toilets on the castle complex?
    The toilet facilities of Gutenberg Castle are only open during events. Further public toilet facilities are located at the church or at the Kirchensträssle car park (former post office building).
  • How do I reach the castle by car and public transport?
    Coming by car on the A13 motorway, take the Trübbach/Balzers exit and follow the road to the centre of Balzers. For public transport, take LIEmobil bus line 11 towards Sargans or Feldkirch and get off at the Rietstrasse or Mälsner Dorf stop. The further access to the castle is generally only permitted on foot.
  • Can I rent the castle for private events?
    Yes, during the season from May to October the castle gates are open for events of all kinds. The rose garden with the adjoining castle chapel is a popular place for aperitifs, celebrations and contemplative events such as free weddings or baptisms. The outer bailey is freely accessible all year round and cannot be reserved for closed societies.
