Fort des Rousses

The Fort des Rousses is a historic military fortress in Les Rousses, France, in the heart of the Haut-Jura Natural Park. Built from 1800 onwards on Napoleon's orders, it is the second largest fortress in France, with over 50,000 m² of vaulted cellars and kilometres of underground galleries. Since 1998, the fort has housed the Juraflore Comté cheese-aging cellars, where visitors can discover the art of cheese aging in unique stone vaults. Guided tours reveal both the fort's prestigious military history and the secrets of the region's famous cheeses.

Opening hours

The fort is open every day; the boutique is open daily from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 during the Christmas holidays. Guided visits require online reservation.
