Command Bunker Border Brigade 8

The Kommandobunker Grenzbrigade 8 in Haslen, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland, is a former underground command post of the Swiss Border Brigade 8, built in the early 1960s and declassified in 2013. The museum displays over 30 original offices, dormitories, a machine room, telephone exchange, kitchen, and soldiers' mess, authentically recreated with the help of former staff. Visitors can see historic communication technology, a detailed terrain model of the American Rhine crossing in World War II, and various uniforms. The exhibition also explores the Cold War from multiple perspectives.

    The bunker has a constant temperature of around 10–12 °C. A jacket is recommended.
  • How long does a guided tour last?
    A guided tour lasts about 1.5 hours. Please arrive 5 minutes before the start.
  • Is the bunker accessible by public transport on weekends?
    On weekdays, take the PostBus to the stop 'Haslen AI, Schiessegg' (300 m walk). On weekends, use the PubliCar Appenzell shuttle service (reserve in advance via 0848 55 30 60).
  • Can I eat at the bunker?
    Yes, the Soldatenstube (soldiers' mess) offers drinks and simple meals during museum visits. On open Saturdays, Wienerli, barley soup, and cheese tarts are available. Group menus are available on request.
  • Is the bunker suitable for children?
    The bunker is primarily a historical military site. The exhibition includes stairs throughout the facility. School groups from secondary level upwards are specifically welcomed.
