Château d'Illens

The Château d'Illens is a historic castle and ruins site on a rocky promontory overlooking the Sarine river in Rossens, commune of Gibloux, in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. The site comprises the ruins of a 12th-century medieval fortress with its keep and enclosure wall, as well as the 15th-century manor built by Guillaume de La Baume. Managed by the Association Château d'Illens, the site of national importance is undergoing conservation and archaeological work to preserve its historic vestiges.

Opening hours

The site is accessible to the public throughout the year; the esplanade of the castle is freely accessible on foot. The interior of the castle is closed for safety reasons and can be visited on request.

    The pedestrian access path measures about 600 metres from the Illens farm. The last portion crosses the forest on a gravel path, so good walking shoes are recommended. Free parking is available at the Illens farm.

    For safety reasons, the interior of the castle is closed. It can however be visited on request, as well as during events organised by the association. Guided tours of the site and the castle's history can also be arranged on request.

    Yes, the esplanade of the castle is freely accessible on foot, where you can walk, enjoy the calm of the place or organise a picnic. A grill is made available on the esplanade.
