Rosswald

Rosswald
Rosswald is a family-friendly ski area in the Valais above Brig, reached by cable car from Ried-Brig. The car-free alpine village at around 1,800 metres offers 25 kilometres of prepared pistes in blue, red and black grades served by four ski lifts up to 2,600 metres, plus holiday chalets, restaurants and a mountain hotel. In summer the sun terrace is a base for hiking, biking, a swimming lake and paragliding.

Families and Kids

Rosswald is a popular family winter sports resort. Children learn their first turns or improve their technique at the Swiss Ski and Snowboard School, and the Kidspark with a magic carpet right by the mountain station allows first stem-turn exercises. In high season the ski school organises a weekly torchlight descent, an evening snowshoe hike with fondue, a guest race on Thursdays and a warm-up with Snowli on Fridays.

Food and drinks

Several restaurants serve the Rosswald, with Valais specialities such as the Valais plate and cheese fondue. Restaurant Adler sits next to the cable car mountain station with a large terrace, Restaurant Fleschboden at 2,135 metres offers panoramic views and a sun terrace, and Restaurant Parkplatz serves home-style cooking. The Berghotel Klenenhorn also has a restaurant with a large sun terrace and après-ski in winter, though it is temporarily closed.

FAQ

  • Is Rosswald car-free, and how do I reach the village?
Yes, the Alpe Rosswald at around 1,800 metres is car-free. The most comfortable way to arrive is by cable car from the valley station in Ried-Brig, a ride of about 7 minutes; in winter the resort is reachable only by cable car. In summer a narrow mountain road also leads up to paid parking on the Rosswald, but cars cannot be driven to the chalets.
  • Can I rent ski equipment and sledges on the Rosswald?
Yes. Sports equipment can be rented on site at Sport Mode Central and Sport Shop Schirli, and suitable sledges for the toboggan runs are also available there. A grocery shop, Magusii, stocks everyday items, fresh bread and Valais specialities.
  • What tobogganing options are there on the Rosswald?
Two toboggan runs start on the Rosswald: one begins directly at the mountain station and leads towards Resti, while the second requires a 10-minute ascent along the ski slope to the Restaurant Parkplatz before descending towards Riedalpji. The runs cross and lead down to the Ried-Brig valley station; whether they are open is shown on the piste map.
  • What is there to do on the Rosswald in summer?
In summer the Rosswald sun terrace is a base for marked circular hikes and long-distance routes such as the Alpine Pass Trail, as well as bike trails for beginners and advanced riders. A large swimming lake, a playground with table tennis and a free barbecue area are located near the mountain station, and tandem paragliding flights are offered.
  • Are there group accommodations and a hotel on the Rosswald?
Yes, there are three group accommodations on the Rosswald, all centrally located and directly on the ski slope; the Fleschboden group house offers half-board thanks to its restaurant. The Berghotel Klenenhorn sits between the cable car mountain station and the ski lift, but is temporarily closed.
