Portes du Soleil

Portes du Soleil is the world's largest cross-border ski area, linking 12 French and Swiss village resorts between France and Switzerland. It offers around 600 km of skiing across 307 runs, served by 208 lifts, with slopes for all levels and numerous snowparks, freeride zones and ski touring itineraries.

Families and Kids

Three resorts in the area (Châtel, Les Gets and Morzine) are labelled “Famille Plus Montagne”, and there are many zones set up for first tracks. The Lil'Stash in Avoriaz is a children's snowpark on the green Proclou slope, with small kickers, slides, boxes, giant mushrooms and a yeti theme. Local ski schools offer special children's courses, and the area also has fun itineraries and toboggan runs.

Food and drinks

The area's resorts offer a wide choice of dining, from mountain restaurants and huts on the slopes to village restaurants. Savoyard and Swiss specialities such as raclette, fondue, tartiflette and Valais dried meat are widely served, alongside crêperies, pizzerias and cafés. Several high-altitude terraces offer views of the Dents du Midi and the surrounding peaks.

FAQ

  • Do I need a hands-free card to ski in Portes du Soleil?
Yes. The resorts use a hands-free system with a rechargeable smart card that is read remotely at the turnstiles. The card costs €3 (CHF 4) and is compulsory for all ski-pass purchases of 3 days or more. It can be recharged repeatedly and collects loyalty points that entitle you to free ski days in the area.
  • Can I ski from France into Switzerland with the same pass?
Yes. The Portes du Soleil pass, first created in 1976 as the first international ski pass, gives access to all 12 linked resorts on both sides of the border, so you can start your day in France and finish it in Switzerland, or vice versa.
  • What does the Portes du Soleil season pass include beyond the local slopes?
A winter or annual season pass also grants over 30 free ski days in partner resorts, including the 4 Vallées (Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon), the AlpsPass areas (Aletsch Arena, Adelboden-Lenk, Engelberg-Titlis, Jungfrau), Espace San Bernardo (La Rosière–La Thuile), Compagnie du Mont Blanc and Montgenèvre. Days are issued as QR-code vouchers, with limits such as a maximum of one day per week in some areas.
  • Is there a beginner package for adults who have never skied?
Yes. YouCanSki is an all-inclusive beginner package for adults that combines ski lessons with a qualified instructor, a ski pass and beginner equipment hire including a helmet. It is available as a 6-day pack (5 sector days plus 1 full Portes du Soleil day) or a 3-day pack, bookable in advance through participating ski schools and valid outside school holiday periods.
  • Which resorts are labelled family-friendly in the Portes du Soleil area?
Three resorts carry the “Famille Plus Montagne” label: Châtel, Les Gets and Morzine. The area also has numerous zones set up for first tracks, and local ski schools offer special courses for children.
